Madonna has gone to many lengths to maintain her petite frame, but this diet may even be too strange for her.
Also reportedly followed by actress Demi Moore, Hollywood sources now report that she “swears by” the Moon Diet–a diet which alternates fasts based on the phases of the moon.
And the weight loss? It’s major–many people lose up to 6 pounds in just 24 hours.
“Madonna and Demi swear by it and claim to have seen promising results,” says an anonymous source, who spoke to Grazia Magazine earlier this month. “It’s big in the Kabbalah community and there’s no denying they both look pretty good on it.”
And as varied as Madonna’s outfits have been, so is the Moon Diet, which allows people the option to fast during the beginning of a moon phase or by going all out with its extended plan, where people fast when the new moon rises. During the waxing and waning periods, dieters eat a variety of solid foods with plenty of water to help promote the removal of toxins, which founders of this plan claim is controlled by the moon itself.
You won’t exactly get any leniency as far as when you can eat either–experts advise cutting out food after 6 p.m.
“It is critical that you start the diet on the very minute the moon phase begins,” reports Moon Connection, one of the diet’s websites. “‘If the new phase begins during the middle of the day, you can eat or drink whatever you want up until that minute – then start your 24-hour timer. This flushes out the toxins that accumulate in the body due to unhealthy foods, bad digestion, and stress, and provides a detoxifying effect that will strengthen your immune system.”
Unfortunately, not everyone is a fan of this diet, including British Dietetic Association spokesperson Jeanette Crosland.
“Any diet which restricts calories will normally result in weight loss, and this is yet another diet based on fasting for short periods, resulting in a reduced energy (calories) intake over a period of time,” says Crosland, who spoke to the Daily Mail earlier this week. “Overall, this is another “diet” designed to catch the attention of the public, written in a way that suggest a scientific basis which doesn’t truly exist and basically boiling down to a short fast plus a (hopefully healthy) weight loss diet based on reducing calorie intake.”
In turn, other experts also say that the Moon Diet probably works because you’re essentially starving yourself on a regular basis; no moon magic voodoo here. But it’s still a diet that Madonna reportedly swears by–and judging by her physique, it’s clearly working for her.
Bottom line? Chances are if you follow this diet, you’ll lose weight–but this can be attributed to regularly starving yourself for a thinner physique, not because of the mechanics of the diet itself.
