While some experts claim that calories don’t matter when it comes to weight loss, one Iowa biology teacher is proving that may not always be the case–even on a diet of McDonald’s.
John Cisna, a high school biology teacher from Ankeny, Iowa, says he originally started his McDonald’s diet to prove to his students that it’s possible to lose weight on any food–as long as you watch your calorie and nutrient intake.
Following a diet of 2,000 calories per day, Cisna reportedly ate a variety of McDonald food items, including fries, burgers, and salads. He also walked for 45 minutes a day, something that likely led to his weight loss–a total of 37 pounds in just 3 months.
“It’s our choices that make us fat,” says Cisna. ”Not McDonald’s.”
How Cisna Lost Weight on McDonald’s
For many people, it’s hard to believe–eat all the McDonalds you want to lose weight.
But that’s exactly what Cisna did to lose nearly 40 pounds in 3 months.
So how did Cisna do it?
1. He watched his calories. Cisna reportedly ate around 2,000 calories a day, the recommended dietary allowance for most Americans. He also avoided exceeding the recommended daily intake for other nutrients and vitamins, such as carbohydrates, fat, and cholesterol.
2. He still tried to eat balanced meals. Though gorging on fries and burgers is tempting, Cisna opted to eat a variety of healthy and unhealthy foods instead. For instance, for breakfast he had a bowl of oatmeal, two egg white delights, and milk. For lunch, he even went lighter with a small salad.
3. He also made exercise a priority. In the now infamous documentary Super Size Me, director Morgan Spurlock ate McDonald’s food for 30 days and developed innumerable health problems–yet he never made exercise a priority. Cisna didn’t follow his same lead, however, and tried to exercise for at least 45 minutes a day–something experts believe may have contributed to his weight loss.
As a conclusion, Cisna says he wants his experiment to show all Americans that weight loss is possible no matter what you eat–whether it be organic food or fast food. But you’re in control of how much you eat.
“‘I tell people not only can I see my shoes now but I can actually tie them,” says Cisna. “The point behind this documentary is–it’s choice. We all have choices.”
What You Can Learn
While many nutritionists won’t advise you to embark on a fast food diet in the near future, this experiment shows that losing weight is possible no matter where you eat–as long as you make the right choices. Cisna was still able to fit salads and oatmeal into his meals despite eating exclusively at McDonalds–and if you make the right choices too, losing weight will never be difficult for you too.
So–can you make the commitment?
